Threading is definately the solution. However, threading support is much better in QT4 than in QT3. I have recently ported a thread-based application to QT4 and it would be easier to implement it then, rather than waste time developing it now and redeveloping it latter. This problem has been in KMail for quite a while and and maybe we should just wait until KDE 4 is out.
