Anyhow, the problem is not the program used for filtering, you have significant slow downs if you just have a lot of filtering rules (e.g. I have something >100). The real problem is that kmail is blocking the GUI for each and every action it makes. You can't continue writing mail during receiving, filtering or sending mails, etc.

I just entered yet another blocking: If Kmail is waiting for a Kwallet to open, you are not able to open a Konqueror window showing your home directory (in fact, if you try to open it several times, nothing happens and if you open the wallet, you'll get all the missing windows.)

So again: The problem is in fact not the filtering at all, GUI should always be implemented non-blocking from any (backround) processes.
