I believe this problem has been addressed for IMAP, what's left to do is solve the problem for POP.

No, it requires someone spending a few days to reuse the IMAP solution for POP (assuming the IMAP solution is working ok and as best I can tell that is the case). If someone wants to do this give me an email and I'll explain how.

Personally I don't see how rewriting the backend with Akondai will help fix the issue either.

Sorry guys, but I have other priorities in my life now. This is meant to be open source so other people can contribute.
