Here is a quick thought that would help to mitigate this bug until it can be truly fixed.  KMail should detect if a message is completely-empty (I mean, if you hit V for View Source, there is *nothing* displayed), and should *not* overwrite messages on the IMAP server if the local copy is empty.  In such a case, it should redownload the message from the server, and overwrite the local copy.  And, of course, it should pop up a dialog box and offer to output some debug info to a file for reporting.
