Can you try what happens when you quit KMail, delete the index file of the folder (is it inbox in your case?) and restart KMail? I think KMail should try to rebuild the index file then. Maybe one of the different functions to solve problems with the IMAP cache might help also.
Index files are named are named like this.
martin deepdance:~/Mail -> ls -la .inbox*
-rw------- 1 martin martin 149605 2006-07-01 21:49 .inbox.index
-rw-r--r-- 1 martin martin 1485 2006-07-01 22:54 .inbox.index.ids
-rw-r--r-- 1 martin martin 18149 2006-06-30 22:27 .inbox.index.sorted
But this example is for a POP3 account. In your case the mails and index files should be under ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail/imap or ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail/dimap (do not know which one without looking on my work account, I think it is dimap tough). There should be one directory for every DIMAP account.
If you get your mails back through this, this clearly points at the issue that KMail trusts the index file more than it should.
Make a backup first tough.
