The recommended setup is to make a local LDAP slave server.

In theory a remote setup would be conceivable, but that would open a can of 
worms when people will want to have remote IMAP servers, remote SMTP servers, 
etc. which would be very error prone and possibly a performance problem.  So 
for the etch release we want to keep the setup compact and manageable.
