Think I got it :-)

First problem was I was accessing with https://ip-address/horde3
Apparently that does not work. 
When using host name  I started to get more usefull error messages in the web 
interface.

What I did then was checked for the horde component was is causing the errors.
Removed and purged kolab-webclient and the offending horde component.
Reinstalled kolab-webclient and checked for errors again.
Took about 3 cycles but think I got them all :-)

Now I need to give it some data to work with.
