  Aliases work for me, and I have a hard time trying to reproduce this.
I've many instances of lighttpd where it works, and I've not been able
to reproduce the issue, I should try harder, but I lack the time
currently.
  It may be related to an issue like:
http://trac.lighttpd.net/trac/ticket/891

  But I've not found anything very conclusive on upstream's bugtracker,
and I'm surprised only debian users have the problem.
