Hi,

it would be helpful to provide us your actual configuration. I guess you
are using the out of box configuration which does not work on the full
mime-type.

For example:

$ HEAD http://stv-physik.uibk.ac.at | grep "Content-Type"
Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8

does not work, if you specify

compress.filetype           = ("text/plain", "text/html",
"application/x-javascript", "text/css")

which was the default configuration for Debian Lenny. Please read the
documentation [1]

Finally you should really consider upgrading to stable, which also fixes
(parts of) your problem automagically.
