grep-ing for one second syslogs

Sep 27 18:09:14 debian lircd-0.8.3[2873]: reading in mode 
LIRC_MODE_LIRCCODE failed

resulted in 23,000 + lines !

this happens when the IR detector is removed from the usb port
(using lirc_atiusb)

As well as a large 18GB log file this also consumed 100% of one cpu core
