What version where you updating from?

Well, if irw indeed works OK, lirc should do what it should... Are you 
sure it really shows the same data as before the update?

hardware.conf is not used in 0.9.4. Have you read README.debian which 
describes the manual handling required when updating (if you are 
updating from 0.9.0)

I. e., "no such file or directory", right?

Can you post output from "ls -R /etc/lirc"?
