Still, the really strange thing here is the existence of the /dev/lirc 
link. Contrary to what I thought, it's not part of "old" lirc 0.9.0. It  
seems strange if some other package created it. So, basically the odd 
thing is that this ever has worked.  Old leftover from previous updates? 
A manually created link at some point? Why did it surface around the 
lirc update?

A lot of questions, but seemingly not a lirc bug. Will close
