Ah, a forgotten leftover part.  The default ldm theme is intended to
become configurable using debconf.  I believe it is now selected using
alternatives, so we need to add code to ldm to get it to ask with a
low priority debconf question what the default theme should be during
installation.  This will make it preseedable for debian-edu, and we
can switch the defaults to a more debian-related theme (which need to
be created).
