what version of ltsp-server were you using? version of ltsp-client and
initramfs-tools?
dpkg -l ltsp-server
chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 dpkg -l ltsp-client initramfs-tools
(or some location for your chroot for a different architecture)
please consider using the package "reportbug" to report bugs, as it will
help collect relevent information like version.

this shouldn't be necessary with any version of the ltsp packages.
current version (0.93debian1) sets this parameter with a configuration
snippet for initramfs-tools, and older versions should have done a tweak
which configured initramfs-tools to set this argument (though i suspect
some older versions were maybe buggy).
