I guess I am one of the few who know the answer to this one.  I got
three work branches, 'debianfixes', 'debian' and 'ubuntufixes'.  I
released packages from the 'debian' branch, and commited patches
intended for mdz and ubuntu in the ubuntufixes branch, while commiting
debian specific stuff in the debianfixes branch.  At least that was
the general idea.  I got it wrong some times. :) I kept ubuntufixes
and debian in sync with mdz, but did not update debianfixes to avoid
endless conflicts in debian/changelog. :)

Getting sounds working out of the box or with the flip of a config
option would be great, as well as speeding up the boot.  I believe the
latter can be done by dropping some init.d scripts, and by running
some scripts in parallell.  Oliver have worked more on this.
