well, look at 1000s of projects on sourceforge (did you ever notice it
uses nonfree components? (or did you even mind?))...

launchpad is in its early stages, it will make maintaining and merging
way easier in the future (once the supermirror is filled up and once all
ubuntu packages switched from debian source packages to bzr branches
(which is the main target for the future in ubuntu [1])) since merging
will be a lot easier then.

but indeed you are not forced to use launchpad, see the top of the
edgy-ltsp branch page for example [2] there are the links to the branch
and its launchpad mirror at the top, you are free to check out from
wherever you want ;)

the point is that ltsp.org wants to maintain their stuff on LP as well
to make collaboration easier and prepare for the code merge of both
projects, i'd appreciate if debian could do that too, but there is
nobody who forces you to use launchpad and the code will still be
accessible as before, its just the additional infrastructure around the
code that is added to make collaborating easier. if you dont like that,
just use the old way to access it.
