how can we determine if the server is reachable? my first inclination is
to use ping, but not all servers respond to ping.

how do you determine it's a CD install?

we could also have a debconf question for ltsp-client-builder that
passes "--security-mirror none" as an argument to ltsp-build-client,
which could be preseeded.
