this appears to have problems...

make de.mo
msgfmt --statistics -o de.mo de.po

de.po:28:48: invalid multibyte sequence

make: *** [de.mo] Error 1

i think the offending line is the following:

if i comment out that block, it seems to work, but missing the
translation, obviously.
