for some reason, commands given to ssh (such as ldm calling Xsession)
are exec'd in a shell that reads in /etc/bash.bashrc and ~/.bashrc

it seems the python ldm would run the command '/bin/bash --login ...',
so /etc/profile would be read *as well*

I think this was a bug that got fixed, but of course one needs to adjust
one's local configuration
