I've applied a workaround to device-mapper cvs today that I hope
will handle this.

For old kernels, libdevmapper detects if a device number is being
supplied to an ioctl without a name or uuid, and if so, issues
extra ioctls to translate the device number into a name first.
(Inefficient, but it should work.)
