Hmmm. As far as I remember /dev/hdg1 never was a component device
before. Changing md_componnent_detection to 0 solves the problem.

/dev/hdg is an IDE harddisk connected to one of these onboard Promise
IDE RAID controllers. It is configured as simple IDE disk. I've
configured the system two years ago for LVM with a 2.4 kernel. I've
switched to kernel 2.6.x about a year ago.

Why does the md_componnent_detection setting affect my system?

In case of such a policy change, the user should get a warning during
the update process.
