ok that's the solution then.
my habit of installing packages just because they're suggested by the 
package i wish to install is simply wrong in this case.

hmm, yes, maybe in my case it would have helped to mention in the 
package description that installation of this package will break 
non-multipath-device-root-fs-installations - to keep people like me from 
just installing it although they might not actually use it (yet).
whether that's worth it might be arguable - i'd vote for it. :)

i think it would be generally a good idea to make optional 
initramfs-configs not break initramfs even if/while they're not actually 
used, but i see that this isn't trivial in this case so i'd waive this 
as academic... :)
