Bug#543163: lvm2: Please don't depend on udev

Hello,

I've been looking more closely inside the package, and the only mentions
that I could find of dmsetup in lvm2 are lvmdump and udev rules. lvmdump
is just debug (and handles a missing dmsetup gracefully). udev rules are
responsible for handling /dev stuff. I currently don't use udev and my
/dev is statically populated, so these rules aren't helpful to me
anyway, right?

What if I remove the dmsetup dependency and rebuild the latest version of
the package in unstable? It should continue working with no problem,
won't it? Will I need dmsetup if I, say, create a new logical volume?

Is lvm2 development currently directed towards more dynamic stuff with
udev?

Regards,
