It appears that the same problem occurred for me too. I killed the
parent of the D state sleeping process - this allowed much of the
upgrade to continue, although at "Checking battery state..." the
"acpi-support start" had spawned "hdparm -i /dev/sda", which had also
became stuck. A bit more killing allowed the upgrade to complete (with
these errors noted). I reactivated all my LVM LVs and VGs just in case I
was on track to encounter subsequent boot problems, but the next boot
worked fine. I was able to clean up the upgrade and everything is OK.
