Regarding 1)
I always thought it would be quite clear, as the device numbers are  
rather dynamic...
Anyway,... the default bootloader is now grub2, and I guess it was  
even discusse in the meantime to completely drop lilo from Debian.
At least with grub, UUID really works great.

Regarding 2, 3)
As noted by Alasdair, major is not implemented and ignored by the  
kernel anyway.

So is this still an issue for you or can we close the bug?
If not, can you provide a patch or text, what you'd expect as warning,  
and where you'd like to see this (manpage, README.Debian).
