I'm not sure I've followed you here, the SAN is an IBM DS4800, "DATA
ONTAP" is netapp isn't it?

Even without hardware_handler "1 rdac" in the configuration, multipath
always shows hwhandler='1 rdac', and I still get the I/O errors during
boot.
