I'm not quite sure what the best course of action is now. It appears 
that what began with a simple patch is being grown into a Project, and I 
have no idea who is going to take that on.

I would say 'integrate the patch, THEN see if you can generalize stuff 
with libblkid or (of all things) udev". But I'm not sure how that would 
be taken.
