Thanks for your patch. Irrespective, the patch is clean and straight, hence I
have included it.

Good to know. I haven't followed upstream development closely in the last year,
but do you know why the dependency on dm-round-robin was added ? Or is it that
the dm-multipath module will just plain not load without round-round?

No. I don't think these changes have been suggested before. There's no reason to
not include a simple patch like this.
