The geometry package can cause problems if used together with certain other 
packages, but that is not important. Important is the fact that the paper 
size is specified in the dvi file, and one way to ensure that is to use 
the geometry package with the dvips option.
This bug should be reported in LyX bugzilla please (or maybe it exists 
already, I don't know).
