Of course you should.

Don't worry, if anything goes wrong it's easy to revert the
changes. That's the beauty of version control.

Yes, because you're working on 1.4.2, right? I'm working on 1.4.1 in
lyx/trunk right now. You should have a separate branch for 1.4.2. Copy
lyx/trunk to lyx/branches/1.4.2 or something.
Why are you working on 1.4.2, BTW? I don't remember the reasons.
