Do you build with debug symbols? Then it is probably this bug: 
http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3111

Just wait for 15 minutes, and it will succeeed ;-( I always wanted to file 
a bug report in debian for this, but always had more important things to 
do.

Without debug symbols linking takes a few seconds here (on a moderately 
fast machine).
