apt-cache show gettext:
Version: 0.16.1-2
Replaces: gettext-base (<= 0.14.4-1)
Description: GNU Internationalization utilities

Could fit together I think. I still don't know how the puzzle fits
together but I hope I can leave that leason in software development for
some cold winter day. ;)

Ok I just installed the binary from the archive and it's slow aswell. So
the gettext or not gettext related speed problems started pre rc1.
At least it still works, even the localy compiled binary.


So let me summarize:
Post rc1 something changed within the lyx source code and/or the debian boost
package that results in a segfaulting lyx binary.

Pre rc1 something related to the gettext stuff changed that creates a massive
slowdown compared to the 1.4.x development that renders lyx unusable on older
systems like mine. (Hm or maybe the 1.4.x release could be a lot faster ...
maybe I should try that aswell ...)


I'd really like to know if the LyX Mac OS X packages are build with an external
gettext version aswell. AFAIR most speed complains came from OS X users on the
lyx mailinglists and they seem to be similar to those I've. Too sad that the
lists.lyx.org server seems to have problems ATM.
