[Pkg-lyx-devel] Assertions enabled in distribution/Debian packages?

Hi,
we've had some arguments about the fact that we turned assertions on
in the LyX Debian package. ATM we're rethinking our position and I
would like to get some input from you on the topic.

The main argument for turning assertions on is that in cases of an
assertion getting cought the chance for a data loose is minimised.

A negative affect has been that people felt annoyed by regular
assertions with LyX 1.4.x. So the argumentation against enabling
assertions is that it's lowering the usefullness if you've to
restart LyX because of some harmless assertion in the program.

Since the default setting is to disable assertions we're thinking
about following that at least for the next Debian stable release.

It would be nice if someone could eloborate a little bit about
the pro and cons you think assertions can have and which cases
they're triggered and usefull.

Cheers,
Sven
