A non Debian centered aproach will have a better chance to get upstreams blessing
of course. Beside that the trigger thingy in dpkg looks nifty and I don't find
it abusive to use it. On the other hand we don't have policy for the usage yet
and so far I've only triggers running for man-db and menu. If everyone adopts this
feature to work around such issue that might change.

I don't know how many different locations on different systems have to be check to
detect a change and what other mayor distributors use. I suspect there are a lot
depending on the distribution of your OS and the used tex distribution.

It's at least a basis for some discussion on lyx-devel for post 1.6 development.
