This is my understanding of /experimental as well. After all, it is meant
for packages less /unstable!

This why beta2 was not officially announced. The problem is said to be
fixed in beta3.

* as it is in Debian/experimental, no fear of "overwriting" the stable 1.5.5
  with a beta version.

Sorry, I was not clear enaugh. I wanted to say that

- if 1.6 were put in /unstable, it would eventually replace 1.5.5 in
testing as well and make the most recent stable LyX version (1.5.5)
unavailable (as /stable is lagging behind).

- if 1.6 is put in /experimental, both /unstable and /testing
continue to provide version 1.5.x making the use of /testing a
  (relatively) save option.

This would be nice. Announcing this on the lyx-users list would be even
better.
