Fine. 1.6 beta 2 would have been a bad surprise to some users.

I only have limited understanding of the Debian release process, but my
suggestion is creating a branch to be able to maintain 1.5.x and
1.6.beta.x in parallel. (This is what we did with the "jed" programmers
editor package.)
