I'll be glad to try adding some texlive packages.  I tried
texlive-extra-utils, but the problem remains.  All the remaining
texlive is 400MB of downloads, and more than 800MB on disk, so I'd
rather not do that.  Any suggestions?

I also note that I'm seeing the problem now even though only one tmpbuf
is being created.
