Hi,
[2] is in the line with what I imagined first.  What I didn't notice 
when reporting this is "Scale on screen %" setting in the image dialog. 
I will use this for now.

Thinking more about this, maybe the best would be something like an 
option to limit image depending on the LyX window. I guess the problem 
has no chance to being solve in general way.

If you believe it makes sense to report a bug about preview size 
dependent on the LyX window, you or I could do the report. Otherwise, 
I'm fine enough with "Scale on screen" properties per image.
