I see this error too.

$ lyx <filename>.lyx
QGtkStyle cannot be used together with the GTK_Qt engine.
Warning: Document class not available

Furthermore I see it when lyx attempts to display its own help file:

Both files exist:

I've installed large amounts of Debian's TeX packages to no avail.  What 
is needed to actually get Lyx working properly?
