Hi Kel.

I forgot to look there (redfaced).  I looked only in the source tarball
and didn't find anything there.  I guess I forgot I was dealing with a
Debian package.

I did have success building the package after building a kernel package
with:

make-kpkg --append-to-version "-2-686" --revision 2.6.14-4 kernel_image

I will go back and read the docs and comment further.
