For your information, similar errors happens on amd64:

  /usr/src/modules/madwifi/scripts/get_arch.mk:44: *** ARCH mismatch:
  supplied "x86", determined "x86_64".  Stop.

I noted the following in linux-2.6 (2.6.24~rc8-1~experimental.1)
changelog that may be relevant:

  [ Bastian Blank ]
  * [amd64, i386]: Set kernel architecture to x86.
  * [i386]: Remove linux-libc-dev arch override.
