Hi Release Team and other madwifi maintainers,

I would like to have madwifi and madwifi-tools removed from Lenny/testing.
The reasons for removal follow:

* a free driver (in fact 2, but only one present in Linux 2.6.26) exists
and works out of the box -> ath5k
* package based on a snapshot of madwifi development tree that has no future,
therefore making backports in future extremely difficult and error prone
* operation modes that may make madwifi more desirable than ath5k are currently
  broken (#491731)
* the driver is unstable (#492251) and has other funky bugs related to closed
  source components (#494166)
* upstream project is in an uncertain state, that is unlikely to be resolved
  soon: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.drivers.madwifi.devel/6804
* madwifi in etch lifetime required multiple security fixes, and because
madwifi is non-free they must be performed by our package team without
blanket of protection the security team provide for DFSG software
* I lack the motivation to improve any of the points listed above, except for
the very first one, and I am the primary caretaker of the madwifi Debian
package and have always been so

In summary I believe the madwifi driver to be too buggy and prone to security
flaws, it would seem wrong of me to promote its usage by consumers of Debian
Lenny when a alternative and very very well maintained driver exists.

Thanks, Kel.
