Running with start-hildon did the trick! You may want to put that in
/usr/share/doc/hildon-desktop/README.Debian or something, this
is really hard to know for someone using Debian and not Hildon.
(Well, probably most people with n810 don't know that either :-)

This bug can be closed.

However, even when I start this way, bug 545341 [1], "i18n strings are
not loaded or properly displayed", still very much applies and makes
the entire interface unusable. But I digress since this is 545340 :-)
