Thanks all for the responses! To clarify, I'm not interested in
integrating this into etch. A fix in sid would be just perfect. The
latest version in sid still doesn't work for me. It may turn out that I
need some newer packages either on the client or on the server side, but
etch + sid glibc + sid mc still has the problem.
