Additional note: I managed to set the values for the root user (by 
using nano editor) but that same trick is not working for my standard 
user, the one I am using in my GNOME session.

After restarting the machine, root's MC profile keeps the modified 
settings, but my user's MC profile does not (edited values revert back 
to the default values). That's a bit weird.

What can be the cause of this? :-?

I also tried to disable "auto-save setup" before editing the "ini" file 
with nano editor but does not work, either.
