Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mc

After upgrading from Lucid 4.7.0-1 to Maverick 4.7.0.6 my installation
of Midnight Commander worked - except for the mcedit component. Opening
and displaying existing files works. But when editing any files (local /
remote) it only ever inserts dots. No alphanumeric or other ASCII
characters are accepted (=just turned into full stops).

It's not just a display thing. When saving an edited test file those
characters really turned out to be full stops, 0x2E.

More curiously, mcedit accepts all other keystrokes (F10, F2). And it
displays alphanumeric/ascii input in any dialog boxes (F7 search)
trouble-free. It's really just the main editor area which turns
everything into dots.

Copy and Paste works without turning text into dots. And amusingly
Menu>Format>Insert-Literals also allows injecting any letters/numbers.

Downgrading back to the Lucid version 4.7.0-1 however "mcedit" works as
before. So I assume it's not a locale issue.

Anyway, TERM=xterm (via gnome-terminal), LANG=de_DE.UTf-8, same for en/C
locale.

The Natty version 4.7.0.9-1 too works correctly for me. Reinstalling 4.7.0.6-1 I'll get the weird dots again.
It also happens on the raw console (TERM=linux) and normal `xterm` as well as `xfce4-terminal` (TERM=xterm).

Not sure if this bug report is of any use. Probably not. No idea what to investigate else here.
Just wanted to report it. Weirded me out.
For me this issue will solve itself in a few weeks. (Just upgraded to Maverick to upgrade to Natty later.)
