There is nothing in postinst that can fail unless update-alternatives
fails. And the message that you are having indicates that e.g. there was
an attempt to execute a 64-bit image on 32-bit system, which makes it
even more intriguing.

However, I don't think it has anything to do with mc. For instance you
had some packages which were compiled against old debhelper, which might
have caused problems with triggers.

If I were you, I would try to reboot and then fix the package tree by
issuing sudo apt-get clean and then sudo apt-get install -f .

Otherwise if it doesn't help I guess I have to wait till April and close
this bug due to Karmic EOL :-)
