Then it can be behind a config option...

Actually interacting with upstream is one part of a Debian Maintainers
job.
One reason why there is that "forwarded" tag in the BTS, you know.

Thats a step forward, yes. Now it would be nice if mc would do that on
its own...

I've done that myself, as I simply disagree with the closing. I sure
understand this is not a patch that Debian itself wants to carry alone,
nor might it want to develop it alone...
But one part of a Maintainers job is collecting things like this,
forwarding them to the right place, etc. Thats one of the nice things of
the BTS, it is not just a place for "Debian only" bugs. It can and does
carry much more. And it does so while not having to let all users learn
10trillion different bug tracking systems, get a login on whatever the
next random upstream uses, etc.
