What did not start? When did it not start?

Any messages?

And why aren't you using reportbug to include all the nice output by
/usr/share/bug/mdadm/script ?

Do you have your root on RAID?

Could you please give me more information? For instance, by running

  sh /usr/share/bug/mdadm/script 3>&1

mdadm is really broken right now. I will work on it soon.
