I have done some further testing with different versions, 3.1.2-1 also
fails, so I changed the bug version.

Also tested with squeeze/testing mdadm_3.0.3-2 modified to use
script.local-top from mdadm_3.1.2-2. Works well.

So, combined with your test, problem seems to be in mdam binary 
somewhere between 3.1.1-1 and 3.1.2-1.
